About the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (Excerpt from the CRPD Information Network)

The CRPD is the first human rights treaty of the 21st century, deeply impacting the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities globally.

Adopted by the United Nations, its purpose is to promote, protect, and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity. By reducing the disadvantages faced by persons with disabilities in society, the convention aims to grant them equal opportunities to participate in the civil, political, economic, social, and cultural spheres.

• December 13, 2006: Adopted by the United Nations.

• May 3, 2008: Entered into force.

The 8 Core Principles of the CRPD:

1. Respect for inherent dignity and individual autonomy, including the freedom to make one's own choices.

2. Non-discrimination.

    

3. Full and effective participation and inclusion in society.

    

4. Respect for difference and acceptance of persons with disabilities as part of human diversity and humanity.

    

5. Equality of opportunity.

    

6. Accessibility.

    

7. Equality between men and women.

    

8. Respect for the evolving capacities of children with disabilities and respect for the right of children with disabilities to preserve their identities.
